At Cooper, our Reading Team is here to ensure that every child becomes a strong, confident reader who meets and exceeds Virginia’s expectations for literacy. In partnership with classroom teachers and families, our team helps students build the foundational reading skills outlined in the Virginia Standards of Learning; including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension through engaging, explicit instruction grounded in research.
Under the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA), schools across Virginia use evidence-based literacy instruction. This means lessons and materials are systematic, sequential, and proven to support reading success to guide instruction and intervention for all students. Every student in Kindergarten through Grade 5 receives high-quality core literacy instruction from an approved evidence-based curriculum like HMH, and students receive targeted, data-informed instruction through supplemental tools like Lexia.
Our Reading Team uses ongoing assessment data to monitor progress, personalize instruction, and support students as they grow. We collaborate with classroom teachers and families to create personalized student reading plans for learners who need extra support, ensuring that instruction is tailored to individual strengths and needs.
We are proud to be part of Virginia’s commitment to literacy! We are helping every child become a skilled reader and successful communicator for today and tomorrow!
