Kindergarten is the beginning of an exciting school journey! This year, your child will build the academic, social, and independent skills that create a strong foundation for future learning.

What Will My Child Learn?

Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOLs) provide the framework for kindergarten learning. Throughout the year, students will:

Build Reading Foundations
Learn letters and sounds, develop phonemic awareness, begin reading words, build vocabulary, and understand stories and informational texts.

Communicate & Write
Share ideas, participate in conversations, listen to others, and use drawing and writing to communicate.

Think Mathematically
Count, compare numbers and quantities, explore addition and subtraction, identify shapes and patterns, measure, and solve problems.

Explore & Discover
Ask questions, investigate the world around them, make observations, and develop curiosity through science, STEM, and social studies.

Grow as a Learner
Practice independence, follow routines, work with others, solve problems, show kindness, and persevere when learning is challenging.
