Welcome to an exciting year of teaching and learning at Cooper Elementary Magnet School! First grade is a year filled with new experiences, skill development, and opportunities for students to build a strong academic foundation.
Throughout the year, first graders will expand their reading, writing, mathematics, and problem-solving abilities while developing curiosity and confidence as independent learners.
In Reading and Writing, students will strengthen foundational literacy skills, including phonics, fluency, and comprehension. They will learn to construct complete sentences, develop short narratives, and begin exploring the writing process.
In Mathematics, students will deepen their understanding of numbers and operations through addition and subtraction, place value, measurement, and basic geometry. Lessons are designed to promote critical thinking and real-world application.
In Science and Social Studies, students will engage in hands-on exploration of topics such as weather, animal life cycles, community roles, and important historical figures. These studies encourage observation, inquiry, and connections to the world around them.
In addition to academic growth, social and emotional development remains a key focus. Students will learn to collaborate effectively, demonstrate empathy, and build positive relationships within the classroom community.
We look forward to working together with families to ensure that every student experiences a successful and rewarding first-grade year.
